Are there hotels directly on Lake Walchensee?

Yes, but very few. Lake Walchensee is large, yet its shoreline is mostly forest, protected land and a main road, and the settlements along it are small. That means the number of true lake-side hotels is limited, and the ones that exist are small houses that fill up quickly on sunny weekends and in summer.

Two properties in this guide say on their own websites that they stand at the water. Seehotel Karwendelblick in Urfeld describes 15 rooms, many with a balcony or terrace, a restaurant that serves fish from the lake, and a private bathing jetty for guests. Wallerei Walchensee, in the village of Walchensee, lists 19 double rooms plus an apartment, a restaurant and bar, a terrace on the lake and a panorama sauna. Both are described by the hotels themselves, and we have not stayed in either, so use the official websites for room details.

If a lake-side house is booked, do not give up on the area. The rest of this page explains how to choose among the other bases, because with a car or a bus pass the lake is within easy reach from several towns. Our hub guide to Lake Walchensee gives the wider picture of the villages and the Herzogstand.

Which base is best: the lake, Kochel, Wallgau and Krün, Mittenwald or the Jachenau?

The best base depends on how much you value shoreline access compared with choice, restaurants and transport. The table summarizes the trade-offs, and every distance or drive time should be checked before you book.

Base Best for Distance to the lake Notes
Lake villages (Urfeld, Walchensee) Early mornings on the shore At the lake Few hotels, many guesthouses and holiday flats
Kochel am See Train access, more hotels and shops A drive or bus ride over the Kesselberg On Kochelsee, not Walchensee
Wallgau and Krün Spa hotels, Karwendel views A short drive Valley towns on the Isar side
Mittenwald Old town, rail line, wider hiking base A longer trip Good if you split days between destinations
Jachenau Quiet valley stays with a car A drive Traditional inns, limited services

A lake village is the right choice if your main goal is to be on the water early, before the day trippers arrive, or to swim in the evening when the crowds have gone. Kochel am See works if you want a train station, more dining options and a wider choice of rooms, and if you are comfortable with a short transfer over the Kesselberg. Wallgau and Krün put you on the Karwendel side, with spa hotels and cycling and hiking from the door. Mittenwald is the best-known town, with an old center and strong rail links, but it is a longer trip to the lake. The Jachenau suits a quiet stay in a farming valley and is best with a car. For a village-by-village walkthrough in German, see our Unterkünfte guide.

Which hotels are right at the lake?

Seehotel Karwendelblick in Urfeld and Wallerei Walchensee are the two lake-side options we could confirm on their own websites. They are quite different. Karwendelblick is a small hotel with a bathing jetty for guests and a restaurant that features lake fish. Wallerei is a renovated old house with simple rooms, no televisions, a restaurant and a panorama sauna on the terrace.

Both are small, so ask early. Both also sit in busy corners of the lake on sunny days, which is part of the appeal and part of the trade-off. If you value silence over views, you may find a valley base calmer. If you want to walk to the water with a towel, the lake is the right place to be.

Seehotel Grauer Bär in Kochel am See is also at a lake, but that lake is Kochelsee, not Walchensee. It has a sunbathing lawn with access to Kochelsee and apartments with private saunas, and it is a good option if you want a lake-side stay in a town with a station, with Walchensee a separate trip. Do not confuse the two lakes when you look at photos.

Is Kochel am See a good alternative to a lake-side hotel?

Often, yes. Kochel am See has the most accommodation of any town near the lake, a station on the line from Munich, and a short bus link to Walchensee. Its hotels range from a traditional inn in the village center to a family hotel on Kochelsee with a spa area. The trade-off is that you are on the other side of the Kesselberg, so Walchensee is a separate trip rather than a walk. Our Kochel am See guide covers the town in German, and the Walchensee hub shows how it fits with the other bases.

Which hotels have a sauna or spa?

Several of the hotels in this guide advertise a sauna or spa area, which is useful on cold evenings and after long hikes. Wallerei Walchensee mentions its panorama sauna on the lake terrace. Seehotel Grauer Bär has a wellness area with a Finnish herbal sauna, whirlpools and a rest room, and its Seehaus apartments have their own saunas. Parkhotel Wallgau runs the Bavaria Spa, with a pool, a whirlpool, two saunas and a steam bath, and its day spa is open to outside guests by reservation. Hotel Alpenhof Krün describes an alpine spa of more than 500 square meters with a sauna, steam baths, infrared and an indoor pool, and it states that the spa is for guests aged 16 and over.

In Mittenwald, Alpenhotel Rieger has an indoor pool, saunas and a steam bath, Hotel Gästehaus Bichlerhof has a small spa with an indoor pool and a sauna, and the Post Hotel Mittenwald has the AlpenSpa with saunas and a panorama pool. Opening hours, guest access, age rules and extra fees vary and change, so check the hotel’s own pages before you plan a spa evening. Hotels that advertise day passes for outside guests do so on their own terms, so ask first.

Which hotel suits my trip?

Different travelers need different things, and no single hotel fits all of them. These are editorial suggestions based on what the hotels state about themselves.

For couples who want the lake at the door, start with Karwendelblick and Wallerei. For families and spa lovers who are happy to stay on Kochelsee, Grauer Bär is the larger, more facility-rich option. For rail-and-bus travelers who want a village-center base, Hotel Gasthof zur Post in the middle of Kochel works well, with a family-run inn and a Bavarian restaurant that has rest days, so check them. For wellness above all, Parkhotel Wallgau and Hotel Alpenhof Krün are the two valley options. Parkhotel Wallgau has a 15-meter pool and two saunas, while Alpenhof Krün describes a larger alpine spa, though only for guests aged 16 and over.

For hikers and rail travelers who like Mittenwald as a base, Alpenhotel Rieger and the Post Hotel are in the center, and the Bichlerhof says it is in the historic old town with the station within easy reach. For a quiet stay with a traditional inn, Gasthof zur Jachenau offers rooms, a junior suite and a holiday apartment, but its restaurant has limited opening days, so check them before you arrive.

If you are traveling by public transport, favor Kochel am See or the lake villages, because trains and buses are most practical there. If you are driving, any of the bases works, but allow time for traffic on the Kesselberg road on busy days. Our day trip guide explains the train-and-bus option if you prefer to leave the car behind.

How far in advance should I book, and what should I check?

Book as early as you can for July, August, public holidays and any sunny weekend. Lake-side houses are small, and the best rooms go first. Shoulder seasons, such as May, June and September, are usually easier, though events and school holidays can change that. If your dates are flexible, use the Check latest price buttons to compare nearby options and read the cancellation terms before you pay.

Before you book, confirm a few things directly with the hotel. Ask whether your room has a lake view, since a hotel at the lake does not mean every room faces it. Ask about parking, especially if you arrive late or have a large vehicle. Ask about dog rules, extra conditions and any areas where dogs are not allowed. Ask whether breakfast is included and whether the restaurant is open on the evenings you plan to stay. Finally, ask about local guest cards or transport benefits, because some destinations offer free local buses and trains to overnight guests, and the conditions change.

What about holiday flats and camping?

Many visitors skip hotels altogether. The lake villages have a long list of holiday flats and guesthouses, and local tourism sites list them. Holiday flats suit families, longer stays and anyone who wants to cook, but they often have minimum stays and cleaning conditions. Camping is also an option around the area, with rules and sites that vary by municipality.

Two examples of lake-side holiday accommodation that we confirmed on the operators’ own websites are not hotels, so they are not on the shortlist. Seppenbauernhof in Sachenbach describes holiday flats with a sauna and a beach house on the shore of its bay, and says it no longer accepts dogs. Haus Urfeld26 in Urfeld is a holiday house for two to six people with a panorama sauna and views of the lake and mountains, and it states a minimum stay. Both are described by the operators, so confirm the access road, minimum stay and house rules before you plan around them. The Sachenbach side in particular depends on the toll road or the Jachenau route, which is why we flag the access for checking.

Use the Check latest price links on this page, or the Stay22 plan block below, to compare flats near the lake alongside hotels. Whatever you choose, confirm the exact address, parking and house rules with the host, because the same village name can mean quite different distances to the water.

How did we choose these hotels?

We only list properties that we could confirm on their own websites or on an official tourism site, and we link each one so you can check it yourself. We do not show prices, star ratings or guest reviews, because they change and we cannot verify them. Where a detail such as lake distance, parking or dog policy is not confirmed, we flag it for you to check.

The list is deliberately short and mixed. It includes two hotels at the lake, two in Kochel am See, one in Wallgau, one in Krün, one in the Jachenau and three in Mittenwald. If we cannot confirm a property, we leave it out rather than pad the page. We will add more as we verify them, and we welcome corrections from hotels and readers.

Walchensee hotel FAQs

Are there hotels directly on Lake Walchensee?

Yes, but only a few, and they are small. Seehotel Karwendelblick in Urfeld and Wallerei Walchensee state on their own websites that they sit at the water. Most other accommodation near the lake is guesthouses and holiday flats, so book early for summer and sunny weekends.

Which town is the best base for Lake Walchensee?

It depends on what you want. The lake villages put you at the shore, Kochel am See offers the most hotels and a train station, and Wallgau, Krün and Mittenwald add spa hotels on the Karwendel side. The Jachenau suits quiet stays. Whichever you choose, confirm the drive time to the lake first.

Do I need a car if I stay near Lake Walchensee?

A car is convenient, but not essential if you stay in Kochel am See or in a lake village. A regional train runs from Munich to Kochel and a local bus continues along the lake. Check the timetable and last return, because services thin out in the evening and off-season.

Which hotels near Lake Walchensee have a sauna or spa?

Wallerei Walchensee mentions a panorama sauna on its lake terrace. Seehotel Grauer Bär in Kochel, Parkhotel Wallgau, Hotel Alpenhof Krün, and the Mittenwald hotels Rieger, Bichlerhof and Post Hotel list sauna or spa areas. Opening hours and guest access vary, so confirm them with the hotel.

Are dogs allowed in hotels around Lake Walchensee?

Policies differ by hotel and can change with fees or room type. Some places accept dogs on request, others restrict them in spa or restaurant areas. We mark dog rules as something to verify for every property, so contact the hotel directly before booking and ask about extra conditions.

When should I book a hotel at Lake Walchensee?

Book as early as you can for summer, public holidays and sunny weekends, particularly if you want the few lake-side houses. Shoulder seasons are easier and often calmer. Because availability changes daily, use the Check latest price buttons to see current options and cancellation terms.
